Why isn't the wood in my fireplace burning?

This is our first fireplace, and we can't seem to keep a fire going. Kindling burns well, but obviously doesn't last long. The actual logs that we are putting on the fire only char on the outside, and do not actually catch fire. We have used fire starters, but once the starter is gone, there is no flame left, only whole, charred logs. Any suggestions?
